Abstract

Percutaneous cryogenic block of the facet nerve of Luschka was attempted in an effort to extend the duration of relief from intractable back pain. Following study in dogs, the method was tried in ten patients, with dramatic immediate improvement in nine, and significant relief continuing up to three months in four of the patients. Criteria for selection of patients and the technique are described.
