Skin Blood Flow After Axillary Brachial Plexus Block: Use of Laser Doppler Flowmetry

Abstract

Laser doppler flowmetry was used to measure the effects of axillary brachial plexus block on skin blood flow. The principles of the laser doppler are presented. Results indicated that blood flow in the blocked extremity (as well as temperature) increased significantly, whereas blood flow in the unblocked extremity (as well as temperature) declined significantly. The ease of obtaining these measurements should encourage investigators to apply the laser doppler apparatus for future similar studies.
