Value and Limitations of Test Dose Prior to Epidural Anesthesia

Abstract

Three illustrative cases are briefly presented to demonstrate the potential fallibility in administration of a test dose prior to epidural anesthesia. Possible mechanisms are discussed of the central nervous system or cardiovascular toxic reactions to local anesthetics that can occur even if the test dose demonstrates no alterations.
