Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy of the Face and Neck Report of Six Patients Treated with Stellate Ganglion Block

Abstract

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is an infrequent cause of neck and face pain and is a diagnosis that is frequently overlooked even though it closely parallels RSD of the arms and legs. Six patients are reported who underwent extensive diagnostic testing and multiple consultations before the pain management referral. They were then successfully treated with stellate ganglion blocks and adjunctive treatment consisting of tricyclic antidepressants, occupational therapy, and monitored relaxation. All patients reported a significant decrease in symptoms and in pain.
