  • Gaston Labat Gaston Labat, MD, (1877‐1934) founded the American Society of Regional Anesthesia in 1923. Born in Mauritius and graduated from Montpellier University in France, he came to the U.S. in 1920 to become special lecturer on regional anesthesia at the Mayo Clinic. He authored the classic textbook, Regional Anesthesia: Its Technique and Clinical Application, in 1922, and subsequently became clinical professor of surgery (anesthesia) at New York University and Bellevue Hospital.
